The Stages of Cultural Adjustment

Culture shock can have a huge impact on individuals, teams, and companies. Following a move to a new country, the cultural stages of adjustment can sometimes be quite painful. You need to work with the members of the team who have moved from other countries to help them understand that adjusting to a new culture takes time, and that it can be very difficult being in a situation where nothing feels familiar or comfortable. It takes time for people to adjust and integrate into a new culture.

There are four major stages of cultural adjustment:

  • Honeymoon—enthusiasm

  • Conflict—hostility

  • Integration—adjustment

  • Adaptation—home
