Managing the Virtual Team

Managing remote employees requires a very different approach from managing local employees. However, it is important for you to be as available to your remote employees as to your local ones.

As shown in Figure 1.5, local employees bump into each other at various times throughout the day in all kinds of places:

  • In the kitchen getting a cup of coffee

  • At the water cooler

  • In the elevator

  • In a meeting

  • In the restroom

  • Walking up the stairs

  • Wandering down the hallway

  • In the cafeteria or at a local restaurant at lunchtime

  • In the parking lot or the lobby of the office building
