Developing performance appraisals – a new GPS for Gen Y

Many of the performance-appraisal systems used in organizations today miss the target, especially for our Gen Y workforce. I learned this the brutally tough way.

Five years ago, one of my clients in the high-tech sector asked me to design a performance-appraisal system for her predominantly Gen Y staff. I designed an assessment grounded in behaviorally anchored rating scales (BARS), which consisted of scales that were quantified with specific behavioral examples ranging from poor to exemplary performance.
