Aligning Projects with the Enterprise

When Rio de Janeiro bid for the 2016 Summer Olympics and Paralympics in 2007, it competed with five other cities: chicago, Baku, Doha, Madrid, Prague and Tokyo. Rio also tried, but failed three times to host the Games in 1936, 2004 and 2012. Regardless, it's hard to predict statistically the chances of winning such a complex bit. However, one thing is sure. The City of Rio de Janeiro, in collaboration with the Brazilian Olympic Committee, has already spent millions in developing the proposal, and made a $14 billion commitment in its proposal for organizing and hosting the next Olympic Games. The organizers also had to secure commitments from other cities—Barra, Copacabana, Deodoro, and Maracanã—to become satellite venues for the Olympic Games, plus sites for the football matches, which will be held in the cities of Belo Horizonte, Brasília, Salvador, and São Paulo. On January 14, 2008, Rio de Janeiro was shortlisted by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) as a candidate, receiving a score of 6.4 on its proposal. One year later, Rio de Janeiro submitted its Candidature File to the IOC, followed by IOC visits, formal meetings, and on-site inspections validating the proposal and assessing the quality of the bid.
