Part II: Complexity

Tic-Tac-Toe problems are what managers wish for at three o'clock in the morning when their projects are going south. Problems got more complicated in the Industrial Age. Those were the kind Taylor had to deal with. In contrast, modern problems are more like this:

  • Should we raise the minimum wage?

  • Should the United States attack the U.S.S.R for putting missiles in Cuba?

  • Why did the stock market lose over 500 points in a single day in October 1987?

  • What features should our software have?

These are complex problems. They're messy. There isn't necessarily a single “right” answer. That describes most software development projects I've ever been part of.
