The XP Practices

The XP practices fall into three categories:

  • Practices most people agree with, but often ignore.

  • Practices most people don't understand.

  • Practices that spark riots.

Some XP practices, like the 40-hour week, get lots of lip service in IT shops. I don't know too many people who would say having a team maintain a sustainable pace (roughly a 40-hour week for most humans) is bad. When the pressure's on, this practice usually gets pitched out the window, but most people agree it's a good idea. There are some managers who grind people down to a nub and think that's an achievement. Their people leave.
