Dealing with Programmers

How does a software development manager who thinks growing software is a good idea deal with the programmers on his team? The first thing each manager has to learn is that he doesn't “deal with” programmers; he relates to them. They're people, just like him, but with different skills and a different job.

Managers who want their teams to grow software are in the trenches with everybody else trying to figure stuff out. Programmers happen to have the technical skills needed to make the software that team's on the hook to deliver, so treat them well. They're your bread and butter.
