Good Enough Answers

When asked to predict the stock market, J. P. Morgan reportedly said, “It will fluctuate.” Not quite what his questioner was looking for, perhaps, but honest. That's about as good as we can do with software development. There are only two specifics we can predict reliably when we start a project:

  • The system we end up with has to meet a business need somebody with money is willing to pay for.

  • Time, money, and patience will run out.

Time, money, and patience all slip away. The question is, how can we produce great software that adds value before that happens?
