Chapter 13. Starting Projects

A project can't start without money. That money has to come from somewhere. Most likely, somebody owns the budget that money comes from. Odds are good that that person knows very little about what growing software means, at least in the way I've described. If that person does know, I suspect he thinks the whole idea is crazy. At least it's way too risky for his taste. That means when a manager needs budget for a project, he has to do something potentially risky. He has to ask for money from a skeptical source.

One of the best ways for a manager to do that credibly is to make sure he's saying things that potential sponsors understand. He has to speak their language.
