Control works when it produces the result you want. It doesn't work when it doesn't produce the result you want. Not profound perhaps, but frequently ignored.

In a manufacturing environment

  • You know exactly what result you want before you start the process

  • Controlling things gets you the result you want predictably

If it's worth all the hype, Six Sigma says that vehicle had better look so much like the first 10,146 of them that you really can't tell them apart. Control can work in a manufacturing setting because it can lead you to the result you know you wanted when you started.
