9.7. ETHICS

Two principles of ethics should be stressed in the laboratory: reciprocity and benefiting the least powerful.

Reciprocity is an old principle found in the ethical systems of both East and West. The dictum "Whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets" (Matthew, 7: 12) can be translated into "Do not do unto others what you do not want others to do unto you."

The principle of benefiting the least powerful is less well known and is based on the idea that in every social system some have more power than others.
