A MASTER PLAN FOR THE PRODUCT MANAGEMENT ORGANIZATION

In Chapter 2 of The Product Manager’s Desk Reference, I recommend that product managers use a Product Master Plan as a “holding document” or plan of record for everything related to the product’s business. The Product Master Plan captures the product’s history and decisions, and it stores bodies of evidence for those decisions just as the judicial system uses precedents to keep track of prior decisions. Having a properly maintained Product Master Plan also allows future product managers and/or product leaders to better understand what was done before, and why.
