Employee development

4.1 Introduction

We have covered the initial areas of HRM in terms of employee resourcing and employee rewards. One area integrally linked to both of these is employee development: once the HR plan has been completed and HR recruited, how do organisations develop these HR and ensure their work is carried out well? A whole set of management and business issues emerge, ranging through the rationale, amount, type and assessment of employee development. As in many of the areas and activities of HRM, there are a variety of practices, from the more simple to the more complex, and these development practices remain difficult areas. Acknowledgement of the issues and their complexity is at least a useful start.
