9   Organizations andauthority

Once anyone takes on the role of manager, they assume authority. Like putting on a coat, they suddenly find they have an additional quality. At first it may not fit too easily, but with experience it becomes more comfortable. If we were to look for some central or pivotal idea which formed the very heart of understanding management we would probably find two things – profit and authority. Our concern here is with authority – the right to give orders and command obedience.

Authority owes its pre-eminence to the fact that first, it is such an intrinsic quality of the ‘role’ of manager that it becomes part of the psychology of the role incumbent and second, that it is the very building block of organization structure. ...
