The purpose of our discussion has been to describe the skills and processes that can best guide nonprofit organizations not only over the bumps and curves of leadership transitions, but through the entire leadership cycle. No leader stays forever, and even good partnerships can dissolve. Each organization passes through a life cycle characterized by stages, and each transition point may require new leadership. The challenge is not to ward off or deny these growing pains, but to create a professional culture and the skills to support it. Only then can the organization weather these transitions with the least disruption and the greatest creativity.
