Principles of media law

11.1 Summary

This chapter contains a brief overview of broadcasting law and intellectual property law, together with a rather unsavoury mix of obscenity, indecency, blasphemy, libel and slander, contempt, and flagrant infringement of privacy.

11.2 Objectives and key issues

The essential purpose of this chapter is to give a brief overview of the legal issues that may arise in relation to the contents of media products. The key objective is for the media manager to be able to recognise potential legal issues, and also to be able to begin to make judgements as to the risks and benefits of a particular course of action in the light of the degree of threat of legal action.
