Spend Time Getting to Know Staff Members and Their Capabilities

•   Capitalize on informal “getting to know you,” timeout times. Get ready for spontaneous brainstorming or coaching sessions, in the cafeteria or some other accommodating space.

Your most productive relationship-building times with Yers may well be outside the office or cubicle. So go for a walk. Take them to lunch. Stop for a chat in the break room. Look for opportunities to listen— and seize them.

•   Encourage staff members to talk about what’s important to them, what’s on their minds—music, family, hobbies, friends, anything. You’ll gain a lot of insight into what makes them tick.
