What Good Is a Mission, Anyway?

A mission explains what your team, group, or organization does and what work is outside those boundaries. The more tactical (actionable) your mission is, the more the mission helps you draw the boundaries of work that belongs in your group and work that doesn’t belong. You know what to do with work that doesn’t belong—you put it on the unstaffed work list and work with your manager or your peers to get it off your plate. The more strategic your mission is, the more inspiring it might be, but people might not know how to use the mission to guide their day-to-day work.
