Beware of the Mission Statement Traps

As I’ve worked with managers, I’ve noticed a number of mission statement traps. The most common is the service-level agreement trap.

The Service-Level Agreement Trap

If you have a lot of emergency projects and you’re now trying to manage the portfolio by defining your mission, you’re going to start saying no to some work. When you say no, some people are going to tell you that you need to respond more quickly than you are. Or, maybe you feel badly about saying no to some people in the organization. You might even be tempted to set a response time: “We’ll finish that in the next twenty-four to forty-eight hours.”
