Help the Team Jell

Project managers are not the only ones responsible for making the team jell—but their actions or lack of action can prevent a team from jelling.

The best way I know to help teams jell is to have them work together—and not on rope courses or laser tag. When people have a common goal, make commitments to each other about their interdependent tasks, and use an agreed-upon approach to the work, they are part of a team. If you want your team to jell, help them determine some short-term goals that they can accomplish only together. (That’s one reason the approach discussed in Start People with a Mind-Set Toward Reducing Technical Debt works.)
