Making Your Mark in Second Life: Business, Land, and Money

Abstract

Calling Second Life a game is a lot like saying that an airport is a nice place to take a trip. To some degree it is true, but most airports are not featured in travel brochures.

This Short Cut is not about the airport. Rather, it is about a destination. The destination is about how to make a profitable presence within Second Life—or, at the least, general guidelines on how to avoid losing money.

The media has told you about the virtual entrepreneurs raking in real money within Second Life. With stars in your eyes, you've logged in. You made it through the training obstacle course of adjusting your appearance and learning the basics of buying items. After all of this, one question is common among people: How do I earn money? I'm glad you asked.

The wonderful thing about Second Life is that you can make money. The media has made it quite apparent in late 2006 and early 2007 that this is possible, focusing mainly on the greater success stories of Anshe Chung Studios and the larger corporations gaining entrance into Second Life. The odds are good you are not a large corporation if you're reading this, and if you are then you've paid altogether too ...
