Red Flags On the Way to Greater Involvement

As we saw in the ISE example, understanding existing social and structural factors is critical to successfully forming empowered work teams. Probably the most regrettable state of affairs in the organization is when employees feel powerless. Feelings of powerlessness lead to depression and organizational decline. Part of a team “well visit” should include a check on four factors, listed in Table 10-1, that can lead to a state of powerlessness in the organization: Organizational factors, the leader's supervisory style, the organizational reward system, and job design. Furthermore, instead of the leader performing this check, the team members should do it themselves.
