Carbon: Carbon exists in the Earth’s atmosphere primarily as the gas carbon dioxide (CO2). The overall atmospheric concentration of these greenhouse gases has been increasing dramatically since the industrial revolution, contributing to global warming.

Carbon Credit: Carbon credits are components of a tradable permit scheme. They provide a way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by capping emissions and then giving them a monetary value. One credit gives the owner the right to emit one ton of carbon dioxide.
