24.2. Other Techniques

We sat in silence for a few moments as we contemplated the implications of the misapplication of hammers. Finally, Martha said, "What do you think about managing your company entirely by projects?"

I thought a lot differently. "I think the techniques you taught me should be applied only to things that truly are assignments. Project management is not the universal tool. But to be honest, Martha, I'm having trouble. What processes don't fit into the framework of an assignment?"

"Many things, Will. The strategic planning process, production control, performance management, just to name a few. The techniques that we've talked about over the last year are merely one small but important set of the management tools available for improving the overall situation. Don't think that you know it all yet!"

Then Martha grunted and slowly got up off her rocker. "I'm glad the WindSailor worked out, Will. Old as I am, I still get quite a thrill out of helping somebody out. But all this talking has made me tired. Why don't you get off home and feed my great-granddaughter. Pretty selfish of you to keep her here past dinner time! Come see me next time you have a problem." That was Martha, crusty to the end.

I left with a lot on my mind, but very little of it had to do with projects.
