Chapter 10. Making difficult decisions as the boss

As the boss you might have five part-time staff working for you or you could have ten thousand people within your area of responsibility spread globally. The boss is often in an exposed, lonely position. Everyone they turn to for advice may have a vested interest and therefore temper their comments. Perhaps the best preparation for you as a leader in making difficult decisions is:

  • be clear about what you are expected to deliver and what you want to achieve;

  • have conviction and passion in the way you lead your people;

  • have the courage to take individuals forward into new situations;

  • be conscious of – and confident in – your communication role.
