CHAPTER 4

COLLAGE AND ILLUSTRATION

With their insets, keys, cartouches, and borders, maps often look like collages just the way they are printed. They are, in fact, an ideal material for paper collage and mixed-media work. The shapes of islands and countries, divisions created by rivers and mountain ranges, latitude and longitude demarcations, and interesting blends of type styles call out to collage artists as figures, new lands, animate objects, and transformed landscapes. This chapter will make you want to hang on to every scrap of map you own, and use it to create something new.
