Shading and Highlighting

After many hours of studying faces on a screen, a make-up artist learns to recognize these effects. For example, top lighting will exaggerate any shadows on the face, such as under the eyes and the nose-to-mouth lines. These are the areas that generally need highlighting.

The principles of highlighting and shading are:
