The Face

It is important for a make-up artist to understand the human skull and bone structure, the formation of the muscles and skin colouring. This is to understand:

1.   massage techniques and to be able to work on a face without causing any discomfort;

2.   the highlights and shadows caused by light and how to enhance a face;

3.   why some colours are flattering to a face and others are not.

The skull

A good exercise designed to show this clearly is to paint on a face all the shadows with black make-up and all the highlights with white make-up as shown in the diagram opposite.
