BEHIND EVERY GREAT ACHIEVEMENT—especially those that bring about transformational shifts—is a dedicated champion driven to make a difference. Washington Roebling, a civil engineer who oversaw the thirteen-year-long construction of the Brooklyn Bridge, was one such champion. This structure, deemed by skeptics to be impossible, was to become the world’s longest and tallest suspension bridge at the time. “In every category, it defied comparison and overawed the spectator” and was considered the greatest work since the aqueducts of the Roman Empire.1 Completed in 1883, it became the only land link between Brooklyn, the fastest-growing city in the United States,2 and Manhattan.
