Chapter 9. I Hear You!

Software-defined radio (SDR) seems to have been the Holy Grail of embedded design for years. I remember running into this design challenge multiple times during my engineering career, and I would always get very pumped up about the possibilities, only to come to the conclusion that the technology wasn’t quite ready for primetime.

There are a number of definitions of software-defined radio, also known as software radio. The SDR Forum, along with the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), defines SDR as a “radio in which some or all of the physical layer functions are software defined.” It seems that their definition is stating the obvious.
