Caring for your Mac means keeping it up to date. You need to keep your copy of Mac OS X current with free software updates from Apple. You also need to check for free updates of any other software you buy from other companies.

Sometimes these updates offer new features, but usually they are bug fixes. Occasionally they are critical updates that prevent viruses or fix flaws in the software.
