Not surprisingly, the Internet offers the universe's largest collection of software, available for download by a process known as FTP, which stands for File Transfer Protocol, a set of rules dating back to the early days of the Internet. You can use FTP to download (and upload) files from thousands of sites all around the Internet, many of them universities, which make software libraries available to the general public.
