Structure and Organization

Jack Kerouac wrote the manuscript of On the Road without paragraphs or punctuation on a 120-foot strip of Teletype paper. (His editor must have loved him.) You and I probably can't get away with that, and we must have some structure to our documents. Fortunately, we have tools that Kerouac and his typewriter did not. Word processors make it easy to add footnotes, headers, tables of contents, and many other organizational features.

Another advantage modern word processors have over old-fashioned typing is that they give you the ability to quickly create accurate tables of contents and indexes. You go about creating these in slightly different ways, but both are fairly painless.
