11.1 Introduction

As we have seen, the Hough transform (HT) is of great importance in detecting features such as lines and in circles, and in finding relevant image parameters (cf. the dynamic thresholding problem of Chapter 4). This makes it worthwhile to see the extent to which the method can be generalized so that it can detect arbitrary shapes. The work of Merlin and Farber (1975) and Ballard (1981) was crucial historically and led to the development of the generalized Hough transform (GHT).
