Abstract
This chapter deals with the cellular machine-to-machine (M2M) developments as opposed to high-level architectural elements. It encompasses a discussion on the suitability, advantages, and challenges related to accommodating M2M in cellular systems. It then focuses specifically on early and recent 3GPP efforts and highlights the challenges related to typical machine-type communications resulting from short packets, a large number of nodes, and the need to support highly energy-efficient protocols.
