CHAPTER 24

Rope Drive

Chapter Objectives

  1. Select a proper rope as per the power requirement.

  2. Note the mass per meter length of rope from available data.

  3. Calculate the ratio of rope tensions, depending upon angle of wrap, coefficient of friction between rope and sheave and semi-groove angle of sheave.

  4. Calculate the number and velocity of ropes from the power requirement.

  5. Select metallic ropes for high power transmission.

  6. For the given breaking load requirement, select the nominal diameter and mass per metre length from tables.

  7. Select factor of safety from a table, on the basis of application.

  8. Work out the effective load on a rope, depending upon the working parameters.

  9. Determine the number of wire ropes.
