USING AN AUDIO INTERFACE
The 1/8'' Audio In and Audio Out jacks on your Mac are a simple and convenient way of getting audio in and out of your Mac, but they do have their shortcomings. First off, the 1/8'' stereo jacks are small and fragile and are not considered a good connector for pro-quality audio. Furthermore, the jacks and associated electronics are exposed to possible sources of audio interference inside your computer. Third, while the Mac's built-in 16-bit 44.1KHz (CD-quality) recording was considered sufficient in the past, high-resolution 24-bit recording is the current standard. And some Macs (iBooks in particular) don't even have Audio In jacks.
