Clustering Mail Services

You can distribute the load of a mail server by creating a mail cluster. A mail cluster is a group of mail servers sharing the mail data store with Apple's network-based storage solution, Xsan software (www.apple.com/xsan), and the storage area network (SA) hardware that Xsan requires. If one server fails, the other servers pick up the slack.

With your hardware in place, set up Xsan on the network with Xsan Admin, which comes with Lion Server, in the /Applications/Utilities folder. Then create the cluster's first member, open Server Admin, select your server, and select Mail. Click the Settings icon, click the Advanced tab, click the Clustering tab, and then click the Change button. A setup assistant appears to guide you through the procedure.

After a mail server is part of the cluster, when you make changes to its mail settings (POP, IMAP, SMTP, and others), these changes are made automatically to all the servers in the cluster.
