Nagios for Network Monitoring

Keeping tabs of multiple servers and services on a larger network can be a challenge, especially with mixed operating systems. Nagios (www.nagios.org) from Nagios Enterprises is a set of open source network monitoring software that runs on Mac OS X Server as well as Windows and Linux servers. Via e-mail or SMS, Nagios can tell you about software problems with services and hardware, enabling you to attend to issues before they become major mishaps. Nagios can also automatically fix certain software problems, such as restarting services or applications that have crashed.

Nagios uses a plug-in architecture that lets you add features from the Nagios project or from third parties. Your IT group can write its own plug-ins and scripts. Nagios is serious enterprise software and requires technical expertise, but help is available through conferences and a large online library that includes videos and tutorials.
