Network Backup

With Time Machine, Lion Server does some great backup for all your clients — as long as they're running Mac OS X 10.5 or later. For backing up older Mac OSes or Windows or Linux clients and servers, you can add third-party software to Lion Server. Here are three that also come in versions for Windows clients:

  • Roxio Retrospect Single-Server or Multi-Server (www.roxio.com) is for small to medium-size shops. Retrospect Server comes in several configurations, from a single server to multiple servers. Modules are used for your Mac, Windows, and Linux clients.
  • Tolis Group's BRU Server for Mac OS X (www.tolisgroup.com) comes in packages from workgroup to enterprise levels. BRU Server can run concurrently with other services and includes error recovery for restoring from damaged media.
  • Quest NetVault: Backup for Mac (www.quest.com/netvault-backup) is a full-blown enterprise-level backup system for big, complex networks. Quest NetVault: Backup for Mac supports Apple's Xsan, features modular scalability, and is optimized for virtual machine backup. You can apply policy management tools to individuals and groups.

All these can back up to tape libraries.
