Printer Sharing Features in Lion Server

The print server built into every copy of Mac OS X 10.7 client is quite capable. These are the main features:

  • Printers that are accessible by users on the same local network as the server
  • Print queues that are stored on the server
  • Sharing of network printers, not just printers connected to the server
  • Support of Windows and Linux clients
  • Automatic connections to the network directory
  • Printer load balancing with pooling
  • Remote administration from any computer and any OS with a web browser
  • Kerberos authentication for printing

Readers familiar with Mac OS X Server will notice that that Lion Server no longer supports some features found in previous versions. The most notable is the setting of print quotas for individual users and printers.

But this chapter is about all the things you can do with printer sharing in Lion Server and how to do it. In the following section, I go through some of the terminology you encounter when setting up shared printing.
