We’re all used to using high-tech, full-featured, polished-to-a-high-gloss web browsers to do our navigating about the Web these days. But all but lost under all the modern bells and whistles are the reasons why people have been using the Internet for almost 30 years now: to transfer files back and forth and to run programs on remote computers from our own terminals.

Modern tools can do these things, true; but they’re often so heavyweight and so artificially user-friendly that they actually get in the way of the tasks we really want to perform.
