Although you’re free to spend your time in Mac OS X tweaking system preferences and fiddling with files, I assume you have more productive, creative, or fun things to do. In Mac OS X, this means installing and using applications that enable you to work, create, or play.

Understanding Lion Application Types

You might think that an application is an application, but that’s not the case under Mac OS X. In fact, your Mac can run several different classes of applications:

App Store software—These applications are written to be distributed and updated through the Mac App Store. They are easy to install, uninstall, and launch, and they take advantage of all Lion has to offer.
