Just as you thought the end was drawing nigh… so far in this book, we’ve been looking at networks based on servers running Mac OS X Server tied together with Open Directory. And as you’ve seen, they work great and give you easy administration and tight control over the network and the computers on it.

But if you have only a handful of Macs, you may not need a server in order to have an effective Mac-based network—and you may well prefer not to drop the dough needed for a copy of Mac OS X Server and a Mac to run it on.
