Out of the box, Mac OS X Server supports many common file-sharing services. WebDAV allows Apache locations to be used as a repository for the collaborative file-editing activities. The AppleTalk Filing Protocol (AFP) serves to accommodate legacy Apple file sharing over AppleTalk or TCP/IP. Samba is used to provide SMB/CIFS shares for Windows clients. NFS shares provide familiar file-sharing services for UNIX and Linux users.

All these file-sharing services are disabled by default. Ideally, we would leave them this way; each one poses a security risk to your system. This is a perfect example for a security versus usability discussion. Given motive and ...
