The printers that are available to the system are one type of printing preference, but there are also printer-specific preferences, and specialty CUPS preferences that can be imposed on printing as well. You are almost certainly already familiar with configuring per-print-job setting regarding things like the number of copies to be printed, or, if you have a printer that can print on both sides of a page, whether to use this feature for a particular print job.
