Modems and Dial-Up Networking
Synopsis
- Configure a modem for dialing into my ISP?
System Preferences → Network, and follow these steps:
Select New Location from the Location pull-down menu. Enter a name for the new location (for example, My ISP), and click OK.
Select Internal Modem from the Show pull-down menu.
In the TCP/IP panel, select Using PPP from the Configure pull-down menu.
Fill in the blanks on the PPP panel.
Select your modem type from the Modem panel.
Click the Apply Now button.
- Show the modem status in the menu bar?
System Preferences → Network → select Internal Modem from the Show pull-down menu → Modem pane → click on the checkbox next to “Show modem status in menu bar”
- Make sure my modem is working?
Applications → Utilities → Internet Connect
- Set my computer to wake up from sleep mode when the modem rings?
System Preferences → Energy Saver → Options → Wake Options → click on the checkbox next to “Wake when the modem detects a ring”
- Find out the speed of my dial-up connection?
Applications → Utilities → Internet Connect; the bottom section of the window tells you the speed of your connection.
- Disable call waiting on my phone when using the modem?
System Preferences → Network → PPP; insert

at the beginning of the telephone number you’re dialing (e.g.,*70, 1-707-555-1212
).- Where are my modem configuration files stored?
They are stored in
/Library/Modem Scripts
.- Specify how many times my modem will redial if it detects a busy signal?
System Preferences → Network → Show
