Universal Access preferences: Skip the mouse

To use the numeric keypad to move the pointer instead of using the mouse, turn on “Mouse Keys” in the “Mouse & Trackpad” pane.

It's very logical which number sends the mouse in which direction, as shown below. The 5 key will activate whatever is under the mouse; that is, if the cursor is on a menu name, hit the 5 key. If the cursor is on a sliding bar, hit the 5 key and the slider will move to that point.

You can also enlarge the size of the pointer, as shown below, so it's easier to track as it moves around the screen. Even when it's large, only the very tip of the pointer is the “hot spot” that activates items.
