Filter your incoming mail

Create rules, or filters, to sort incoming mail into the appropriate mailbox. First, create the mailboxes you want for organizing (see opposite page). Then:

From the Mail menu, choose “Preferences….”

Single-click on the “Rules” icon. Single-click “Add Rule.”

Choose your parameters for the type of mail coming in and what to do with it. (If you forgot to make a special mailbox for something, you can actually do it while the preferences pane is open on your screen; use the Mailbox menu.) In the example below, I first made a new mailbox called “Edits.” Then I created a new rule to find any incoming mail from my editor, Nancy Davis.
