Upgrading from Mac OS 9?

If you are upgrading your Mac from OS 9 to OS X version 10.4 Tiger, first make sure your Mac fulfills the system requirements as explained on the opposite page. And make sure you have all the documents, applications, and other files you need backed up onto another hard disk, CD, or DVD before you install the new operating system. If you don't, there is no guarantee you will ever see your files again.

If you're upgrading from a previous version of OS X, you don't need to worry about your files or even your Internet settings and Mail settings, etc., because they will be preserved and handed over to the new OS (depending, of course, on which option you choose; see pages 89).
